Katuda Gedo Project

Re-Learning traditional local construction techniques, which have stood the time for hundreds of years - for an environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable future - This is the goal of the “Katuda Gedo Project” in Kenya with Auma Obama Foundation Sauti Kuu.

The project is in collaboration with Sina Hage an Engineer and Architect doing her Phd thesis and her student Luca Bosert from Jade University of Applied Science doing her Bachalor thesis. We aim to use locally available environmentally sustainable and affordable materials using vernacular architecture and building methods. Through several hands-on workshops with the Sauti Kuu Youth (SKF) and Sauti Kuu Parents (SKP) (the local community) we are experimenting using different materials and building methods - building walls and roof - to find out which locally available materials are best suited for building.

The project will ensure we preserve the Luo cultural heritage by integrating, blending and improving on the traditional building methods to offer a modified, sustainable and durable option for building affordable housing using locally available materials.

To showcase the results of our research and practical experiments, we aim to finally replica the Obama traditional homestead, as part of the Sauti Kuu Heritage and Culture Program. The Obama Heritage home will showcase and preserve the Luo socio-cultural values and traditions and offer children and young people an opportunity for learning.

The project is at its research stage where we are gathering information from Museums, Universities and the local communities to document and preserve the knowledge gained for future generations.
