Position: Trainer for Masonry (2 Positions – m/f/d)

Background Information

Sauti Kuu Foundation (SKF) is a non-profit organization established and registered in Kenya in 2010 and 2011 in Germany respectively. The Foundation operates in Alego Nyangoma, Siaya County and has offices in Munich and Nairobi. In 2018, the organization launched the Sports, Resource & Education Center which comprises various sports facilities, a vocational training centre, a library, and a computer room. In 2020, SKF received funding from the Germany Government through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to promote vocational training in partnership with the Chamber of Skilled Crafts in Hannover (Handwerkskammer Hannover (HWK)). The first phase of the project is for three (3) years with the possibility of further funding for a second three year phase upon satisfactorily implementing the first.

The Sauti Kuu Vocational Training Project is designed to prepare young people in rural Western Kenya (Siaya and Kisumu Counties) through a one-year orientation and exploration course to make an informed decision with regards to which skilled craft they would like to pursue professionally through vocational training on completion of the course. The planned scope of the project includes the phases: vocational skills orientation training courses; development of soft skills and social competencies; as well as preparation for a transition into further vocational training or employment. The project will provide entry-level (3) training for eight (8) trades in accordance with the CBET curricular.

The project is being implemented by the Sauti Kuu Foundation, Siaya/ Kenya, and is funded by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development via Sequa gGmbH in Bonn/ Germany, in partnership with the Chamber of Skilled Crafts Hannover/ Germany (HWK).

POSITION PURPOSE:

SKF is seeking a Trainer for Masonry to be part of the Sauti Kuu Vocational Training Project on site in Kenya. The period of employment is for the duration of the project, which ends December 2023, with the possibility of an extension.

Responsibilities

  • To inform and to consult learners about the skilled-craft sector and the specific trade including skills, requirements, career opportunities, and learner personality requirements to be successful in the trade
  • To prepare and deliver the Masonry training to young people in accordance with the CBET curricular
  • To co-design competence-based modules, prepare teaching/learning materials, schemes of work
  •  To develop and conduct assessments and individual evaluations for learners
  • To provide support to trainees;
  • in getting industry-aligned training to achieve the appropriate level of vocational skills to meet industry requirements
  • in solving technical problems both in theory and in practice
  • in supervising projects and practical work
  • in obtaining internship and employment opportunities
  • Integrate ICT and other appropriate media in training
  • Set and mark examination/assignment
  • To observe and ensure health and safety procedures are practiced
  • Observe and ensure a healthy, safe, and secure working environment


Qualifications/ Degree/ Diploma

  • The trainer shall meet the minimum requirements as set by the CBET Trainers Qualifications Framework 2019 including:
  • Diploma /First Degree in Diploma in Building and Construction, Construction Management or equivalent from a recognized institution or have a KNQF level 7 in the domain and a certificate of an approved Trainers Professional Programme (TPP)
  • Be registered and certified by TVETA as a trainer/assessor
  • Have a Technical Teacher Training Certificate

Work experiences

  • 2 to 3 years of working experience as a trainer/ assessor
  • Knowledge of the VET sector, especially the requirements of the regional training and labor
  • market in Masonry
  • Experience in competence-based curriculum development in VET
  • Experience in highly engaged hands-on learning/teaching
  • Experience in entrepreneurship training is considered an added advantage
